Dragonball Movie Concept Art

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Dragonball movie character designer, Jonay Bacallado, showed his concept artwork for the Dragonball movie film in a recent interview. They show several pieces of the concepts including Goku, Piccolo, Chi Chi, Bulma and more.

Narrator: His latest project has entered a whole new realm of difficult creativity, It involves the diversion of the reality of the dragonball series. His ambition was to give the characters a “new look” than in the manga, while still keeping the spirit of it in tact.

Jonay: This is one of those projects where the artist already has a reference to look off of; my job was not as big as that of say, the producer, because I already had a reference to expand from. To tell you the truth, It was really complicated, we had so much work to do to redesign every character to get them to where they’re at now.

UPDATE

I have to ask you to please remove this information, because the images shown are mine, no one has asked for authorization, and most importantly, because it may lead people and Dragon Ball fans to think this is actual concept art, but it’s not. They are part of my personal artwork.

Oozaru Photo Not Final

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

gokuunknown1 145x110 Oozaru Photo Not FinalGood news. FOX has informed me that the previous photo of Goku’s Oozaru form was only a temporary test. They went on saying it wasn’t official and is NOT the final look for him. When the end of the year hits, we will probably see the true form along with several other promo pictures, so look forward to that. And we should all remember that when leaked pictures hit the internet, we shouldn’t take them seriously since they can be quite misleading.

All About Dragonball IGN Article

Monday, November 10th, 2008

gokubulmadragonball2 145x110 All About Dragonball IGN ArticleIGN staff member Brian Linder has written up a full summary of news/rumors concerning the upcoming Dragonball film. It basically takes you through the casted characters, crew, behind the scenes and gives their opinion and facts with each summary. Read the article below.

Are you ready to see the legend come to life? Based on Akira Toriyama’s Japanese manga, and the wildly popular anime series spawned by it, 20th Century Fox is bringing Dragonball to the big screen this April for the first time in live-action.

The long-awaited movie version centers around Goku, of course, and will trace his life’s journey and the quest to find the legendary Dragonballs before they can be used by the villainous Lord Piccolo. Actor Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, Taken) is Goku and James Marsters (Spike from Buffy/Angel) plays Piccolo.

Fans of the franchise have been waiting a long time for this movie. Fox first picked up the rights to the series back in 2002. Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 10,000 B.C.) was rumored to be directing early on, but the film fell off the studio’s priority list and it lay dormant for some time. It was 2004 when Fox began to pay the property some attention again, hiring a screenwriter. But even then the movie wasn’t put on the fast track. The “ball” didn’t really get rolling until director James Wong (Final Destination) was signed in late ’07.

Dragonball devotees in the U.S. will still have to wait until April 8 to see the flick — or if you really want to see it badly, you can travel to Japan where it opens a whole month earlier — but we hope to tide you over with this preview.

Here’s what to expect when you walk into the theater…

THE STORY:

20th Century Fox has yet to release a detailed plot synopsis, but we’ve been able to piece together some important bits and pieces of the story.

We know that the film centers on Goku, a high school-aged misfit who is trained in the martial arts by his grandfather, Gohan. But when Gohan is mortally injured by fighters who serve the evil Lord Piccolo, his dying wish is that Goku collect all seven dragonballs, mystical orbs of great power, before they can be used to destroy the Earth.

Goku sets out to find the esteemed Master Roshi, who can help him in his quest, and is befriended by a beautiful young woman named Bulma who, it just so happens, possesses a device that can locate the dragonballs.

The rest of the story is still somewhat fuzzy, but we know that Goku encounters Piccolo twice. And we’ve learned that the film’s final act may be set around a global martial arts competition.

CAST & CHARACTERS:

Justin Chatwin as Goku: Chatwin is best known to audiences for his roles as Tom Cruise’s son in War of the Worlds and as the lead in David Goyer’s The Invisible. Chatwin, who may not be as bulky as Goku in some parts of the series, has the right basic look. And, yes, his hair is not nearly as big as his cartoon counterpart, but wouldn’t it look ridiculous if it were done any other way? Chatwin  has reportedly trained with stunt performance company 87Eleven (The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy) to prepare for his fight scenes in Dragonball.

Goku is immensely strong, pure of heart, extremely competitive, not inordinately bright, but dedicated wholeheartedly to the cause of beating the living hell out of evil. In the established lore, Goku grew up on Earth and appears more or less human, but is a specimen of the alien warrior race of Saiyans, who originally sent him to the planet to prepare it for conquest. A coincidental knock on the head cleared his mind of his natural inclination towards global domination, though – instead, he eventually chose to become the planet’s greatest champion.

New Set Release Date

Monday, November 10th, 2008

goku5 145x110 New Set Release DateA few weeks back it was rumored that the Dragonball movie had a new set release date of April 8th 2009. IGN has now confirmed this to be true.

After shifting the release date of their upcoming live-action Dragonball movie by eight months, 20th Century Fox has moved the flick again. But this time it’s only been bumped forward a couple of days.

Dragonball, originally set to open last August, was delayed to April to allow for more time to tweak the film — effects work is still being done and reshoots are currently in progress. Now, Fox has moved the movie up from it’s April 10, 2009 release to an April 8 debut.

That’ll put the movie in theaters on a Wednesday, giving diehard Dragonballers a chance to check it out before the weekend rush, and allowing the movie some time to rake in the dough before facing fresh competition at the box office.

Dragonball Movie Review?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

dblegends screen 04 145x110 Dragonball Movie Review?A reader from Aint It Cool News has sent in a review for an early cut of the Dragonball film. Please note that this is only rumor but does contain possible spoilers.

Hello to all of you,

I am a huge fan of your site and constantly visit here but this will be my first time emailing you about something. I love geek movies because there is nothing better than a well made geek movie. Well after watching the 95-100 minutes (excluding credits) of the movie i say this movie was solid. Ya you heard that right. I simply love the anime but I was very very nervous about it being made by fox. After all the studio has been making nothing but shit lately. Another reason why I was worried about this movie is that the director is James Wong who made final destination 1 & 3 and The one starring Jet Li. What I watched had unfinished sfx and with no scoring done yet. Also… they will be adding one or two scenes which will be shot sometime end of october.

Now let me list the positives of this movie

1) Action – I wasn’t expecting the action scenes to be as awesome as they were. Simply put the best thing about this movie. The last action scene of Goku vs. Picollo are simply amazing and when picollo takes out his huge fucking ass sword with weird rectangle shape tablet attached it at the tip of sword and slamming it on goku was fucking awesome. Lot of blowing shit up, super cool flying scenes, awesome ki blasts. This fight scene was around 13-15 minutes long. There are other small action scenes that are fun and entertaining with slo mo but nowhere as good as the picollo vs. goku scene.

2) James Marsters as Picollo was awesome. He was perfect as picollo. Very mean and a villain that makes you say fuck ya kick all their asses. Oh and Picollo transforms into a light greenish color picollo towards the end of the movie.

3) Justin Chatwin as Goku. This guy surprised me a lot. I really didn’t like him when they casted him as goku but he did a damn good job in the acting department and he nailed the KAMEHAMEHA line.

4) Oozaru – the giant monkey is in the movie. Goku turns into a 8-9 feet tall giant baboon when he looks at the moon. It was awesome looking though a bit CGI. Maybe they will fix it later.

5) Emmy Rossum as Bulma- She was really really good in this role. I liked how she never acted like a wimpy girl and eventhough she knows she can’t win against the evil forces yet she kicks ass. A strong female role I will say.

6) Fullum Assasins – I thought adding these monsters were bad idea but they were pretty damn cool and there was an enitre scene where Goku and his friends fight these monsters and that fight scene was pretty damn good.

7) Joon Park as Yamcha was pretty cool. His acting was spot on like the character and they showed some cool fighting techniques of his. The fight scene between him and goku was good.

Negatives

1) Story – Dragonball fans will be dissapointed with some of the changes they have made with stories and characters etc. Krillin isn’t in the movie, Tien isn’t in the movie too. High school setting for the first 22-23 minutes was so not needed but ah well typical hollywood garbage of adding bullshit like that.

2) Jamie Chung as Chi Chi – Ya this was another casting i didn’t like and my worst fears came true. Her acting is as bad as Jessica Alba’s in F4 movies but thankfully her screentime isn’t that big. I really wished they could have tried harded to find someone else. I hope for sequel she can improve if there is one of course.

3) Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi – I was dissapointed with this. I wanted the fucking perverted roshi who fucking grabs breasts and asses like in the anime but alas all of that is fucking gone. Also he acted like Mr. Kesuke Miyagi. You know what I mean. The lines he spoke were fine but I felt he was uncomfortable in the movie. Very dissapointed.

4) Shenron the dragon – Ah another huge dissapointment. This is like sentinel in X3 all over again. FUCK FUCK FUCK you fox. So ya they get all the dragonballs and the dragon appears but the dragon is hiding behind fucking clouds and you only see his shadow. The voice of the dragon was provided by none other than Christopher Sabat who provided the voice for the dragon in the american version of the anime. When the dragon spoke it was chilling but damnit it was hiding behind clouds. One can hope they will fix this but chances of that are very slim.

5) Eriko Tamura as Mai was underused character and frankly speaking if that is what their intention was to underuse her then they might as well have not added this character and just added more picollo. Her moments were cool and she basically was there to show her nice boobies but ya she was kinda wasted.

Overall, I would give the movie a 6.5/10 simply because i was expecting disaster but it turned out better. The positives I mentioned coupled with some cool funny goku moments like eating a massive turkey etc. were hilarious. If only Master Roshi was perverted and Shenron was visible I would have given this 9 but ah well they messed up there. Hopefully they will fix shenron as they still have 5 months to movie’s release but if not then well fuck you to fox and james wong. But in all seriousness I am glad it aint the disaster I thought it would be. Hopefully you guys will post this. Thank You.

Upcoming Dragonball Trailer Promotion

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

foxlogo1 145x110 Upcoming Dragonball Trailer PromotionWith the recent viewing of the Dragonball teaser shown at Brand Licensing Europe Expo, a new teaser was shown a couple days ago at the recent FOX 2009 line up show. Here is the description.

On October 23rd, 20th Century Fox Korea held a 2009 line-up road show at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hannam-dong, Seoul. At this time, X-MEN and Dragonball special trailers were shown. But unfortunately Joon Park didn’t appear in this trailer. The trailer was edited centering around lead actor Justin Chatwin, Yun-Fat Chow and Emmy Rossum.

Another source states that another Dragonball will have its own panel at the upcoming expo known as Ficomic. The convention will be held October 30th through November 2nd. Rumor has it that another Dragonball teaser trailer will also be shown at this event (most likely the same one most of us have seen).

But that’s not it. Rumor has it that during Jump Festa (same tour that showed the new Dragonball Z anime special) 20th Century FOX will show a secret Dragonball movie trailer on the date of December 20th. This trailer will most likely be the full blown teaser trailer that we have yet to see (since FOX is aiming for the actual trailer to be released 12/12).

We will update this post if we hear about any more expos/events that Dragonball will be held at.

Thanks goes to dbthemovie.com for providing some of this information.

Interview with FOX about Dragonball and Promotion

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

gokuandball high 145x110 Interview with FOX about Dragonball and PromotionOk, I was asked not to post this verbatim (so I summarized it all) so I ask of anyone that wishes to post this to email me and ask permission. But anyways, I did get another chance to speak with FOX and I asked a few questions regarding the promotion of the Dragonball movie. Some of which we pretty much speculated already, some slightly new information and some questions couldn’t be answered just yet.

1. When will promotion for the film Dragonball officially begin and what can we expect?
Promotion will truly begin when we launch the official trailer. Expect to see plenty of TV spots and action closer to the release. This is typical with any campaign. The fans will really feel the motion of the movie to begin by the end of the year and will be promoted at many targeted events in 2009.

2. A Junior Novel and Video Game have been confirmed. Any other possible merchandise? Maybe a TV spin off or new comic series?
Currently could not be answered, hopefully they will get back to me on this.

3. There has been a rumor going around that the sequel to this film will begin filming in the first quarter of 2009. Any truth to this?
There is no news on a sequel just yet. We tend to wait out and see how the initial film does and if sequels can be financed.

4. How reliant is this film on visual effects? Is the majority of the money going towards CGI (such as cities, fight scenes, etc.)?
There will be a lot of amazing effects and yes.

5. How would you compare the official trailer that releases later this year to the teaser that was shown during the licensing expo?
The actual trailer will be different. The teaser shown didn’t have enough ‘energy’ and did not fully reflect the film itself. The teaser was only inteded to show certain elements for L&M purposes and to introduce characters to trade people. This piece did not show the hardcore action that the movie will contain, but the full trailer will.

8. Thank you for your time.
Thanks!

DBTheMovie.com also has a source that described some upcoming new high quality promo pictures.

Goku is sitting sideways on a (non-moving) type of bike/buggy. I’m not sure if it is a three or four wheeler, but there are two wheels at the front, it looks all mean and futuristic and most importantly, it’s dusty and needs a good wash.

Goku is chomping into what looks to be a turkey drumstick. Either that or it’s a gigantic chicken drumstick. He’s wearing his grey-black jacket and dark trousers and it’s in a street setting.

In a fight scene with Goku it appears that Piccolo’s ribbed armor is strapped on around his sides. He has strange black leather gloves on and a long sword with a square, not pointed end. Around his collar is quite a bit of black braid and brocade.

In all the photos of Piccolo I’ve seen so far, he isn’t green. But in the details ones he looks like he has moss forming in his crevices, so he does have a green tinge.

Over his ribbed armor, Piccolo wears a full length hooded cloak, which is the dark browny crimson color as seen in the trailer. It has a rich texture, it looks very exotic and has rows of Sequined circles up the front panels. Extremely nice and billowy.

When Piccolo does swirly things it is revealed that he has striped panels of dark velvety pink at the back of his cloak.

Overall, I’d say he looks like a modern, darker version of Piccolo from the show. But with a bad case of black ear wax and a much better cloak.
