English TV Openings (Multiple Dubs) | Watch Japanese TV Opening

The follow-up TV series to Dragon Ball which was produced by Toei Animation and originally aired from April 26th, 1989 to January 31st, 1996 on Fuji TV (in its country of origin; Japan) is vastly different than its more comical predecessor. DragonBall Z is hard to define as being part of a single genre, as it contains elements from almost every one. The majority of the show, however, is focused on action and adventure with comedy thrown in for good measure. The plot is typically about the main hero Goku, an alien “Saiyan” warrior, and his family and friends fighting off evil doers, human or otherwise, bent on ruling (or destroying) the earth or even the universe and saving the earth or universe in the process. Dragonball Z is an incredibly long 291-episode series with many different story arcs (or sagas), ideas, and characters. There’s an enormous amount of content within the show and it’d be impossible to summarize everything about it. All you really need to know is that DBZ is worth watching if you’re a fan of over-the-top anime-style action and fun.

DVDs
The complete Dragonball Z series is available to buy in stores right now as part of the [North American publisher] FUNimation’s “remastered” season box sets (1), or as part of their “Dragon Box” DVD sets (2). The total of nine season sets display each episode in faux-widescreen (with some of the film at the top cropped) and have been remastered digitally (some would say poorly), while the total of seven Dragon Box sets have the episodes re-mastered by hand by the original Japanese crew and are available to watch only in their intended 4:3 format. Only the Japanese music is included on the Dragon Box sets, however, whereas the season sets have both the English and Japanese musical scores as options.

Anime Movies
In addition to the TV series, Dragonball Z has had many movies based on the anime (that were shown in theaters in Japan and released on DVD in other parts of the world). These movies are stand-alone side-stories that don’t usually connect to the TV series in any meaningful way. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama wasn’t heavily involved in the production of these products (similar in situation to Dragonball GT). Below is the full list of DBZ movies, which have all been released in North America on DVD (and some on Blu-Ray too) at some point. A quick search on Amazon should tell you everything you need to know about the flicks.

1. Dead Zone (1989)
2. The World’s Strongest (1990)
3. The Tree of Might (1990)
4. Lord Slug (1991)
5. Cooler’s Revenge (1991)
6. The Return of Cooler (1992)

10. Broly: Second Coming (1994)
11. Bio-Broly (1994)

13. Wrath Of The Dragon (1995)

Television Specials
Dragon Ball Z has also had two television specials that originally aired only on TV in Japan and have since been released on DVD (and Blu-Ray) in North America and other parts of the world multiple times. Although these specials aren’t adaptations of any of the manga, they do fill in and explain parts of the story that the manga and TV series left out, such as Goku’s and his father’s back story.

1. Bardock: The Father of Goku (1990)
2. The History of Trunks (1993)
