Ocean Dub of DragonBall Z Kai in the Works?

Ocean Studios (the other English dub of DragonBall) is popping up in numerous reports and rumors around the internet that they will be making their own version of DragonBall Kai. The first reports come from the possible voice actors for Ocean, one being the voice actor for Freeza (Lee Tockar). Read his tweets and other quotes below.

“Hi all. Gallery done-Invites pending. Very excited. I got the part of Frieza on Dragonball Kai. My inner nerd is all a-twitter on twitter.”

“Is it true you will be voicing Frieza in DragonBall Kai?”

“I am indeed. They have been very close lipped about the cast at this point for some reason, but as I have already signed the contracts and voiced several episodes and my union knows and I have not signed any non-disclosure agreements, I think it is safe to tell a few people. So yes I am very proud to say I am the new voice of Freeza in DBK.”

The next piece of information actually comes from the ending credits from the broadcast version of DragonBall Z Kai. You can clearly see Ocean Productions listed there, check it out below.

    who cares

A lot of people that prefer the Ocean dub over the FUNi dub will.

Why do this? Why make an Inferior Dub? Funimation all ready did a perfect Dub. All they need to do is get the distribution rights for the UK. No need to give Dragon ball a bad name again. Well to be fair Ocean did an ok job with DBZ but it did not do the show justice. People need to see Dragon Ball in the best possible form available. And sorry Ocean even though your dub has a place in my heart thats not you. Funimation is just far superior.

I agree FUNi is a lot better, but it will be interesting to see what Ocean can do nonetheless. I too enjoyed Oceans dub of DBZ.

I first have to say not because I am bi est, but one big bug of a concern is that when Dragon Ball Z was first released to TV, Ocean Dub were the original cast and then Funimation cut ties with them, BIG MISTAKE! Because one rule that is broken in show biz whether Anime or Movies, TV shows. It is incredible frustrating when production companies for whatever reason recast a character its worse on live TV Shows and movies because you are always comparing Actors to the original Character and this distracts from the show/s, speaking as and Actor. And one thing that Funimation did that made Dragon Ball Z suffer was recast the cast, fine do all the other stuff like less editing but leave the cast alone and stop being such stooges when it comes to saving bucks at the expense of Great voice Actors. Example! Ocean Dub Voice Actors had done hundreds of show for Anime and had experience, verses Funimation cast had limited or no experience what so ever, which you could tell because in the early stages the show absolutely stunk! :( And if I was in charge in would have left the original cast alone. Even though eventually the Funimation cast improved somewhat there voice for Vegeta, Krillin, Piccolo, King Kai, Frieza absolutely stunk! They sounded whiny, old, and not like what the characters should sound like, Vegeta Original Brian Drummond, hat off to you my man you rocked and absolutely ruled as original Vegeta, Christopher Sabot has nothing on you especially early on in eps 54. tried to sound the same and failed. And lastly they changed the music, I say and expensive music score in far more better than a cheap music score done by Funimtaion early on, everything about the original cast DBZ Eps were far superior even with opening and closing title and Opening and Credits! Minus the edits and no blood done by Ocean dub, other than that Ocean Dub will always be the better version even with Remastered versions and re-dubbed versions done by Funimation! That is my opinion! :)

I agree 100%. Especially The Original Ginyu Forse and Frieza and Goku original Ian James Corlett. Plus my favorite Vegeta voice by Brian Drummond is an evil Sayain and feared with Brian Drummond voice verses Christopher Sabat who sounds like an old man. Not to mention Frieza Sounds like and old women with Linda Young as opposed to Pauline Newstone who is underrated as Frieza. Also Scott McNeil as Piccolo and the rest kills Christopher Sabat’s impersonations. Don’t forget the original cast had vast experience verses Funimations cast in Texas, because Ocean Dub cast majority had done Beast Wars Transformers and alot more Anime shows. Ocean Dub you rule and will always be the originals even with all the remastered versions. It was not Oceans fault why the cast recast, but Funimation splitting with Saban, who were responsible for edits. But their budget was bigger and better plus had a vast better music score with Shuki Levy’s music verses Bruce Faulconer’s.

    i love the old cast

I think you guys should do it, just like Dragonball Z Kai’s scripting and voice acting has improved, I’m a 100% sure Ocean’s have also, if you compare Frieza Saga Ocean to Buu Saga Ocean, I think Buu saga is WAY better, from voice’s to the background music. I’d say give it a shot…

I couldn’t watch the show with the sound on anymore once Funimation used their scabs, after they lost funding from Saban(and consequently lost Ocean without it). They really should have worked at securing a new contract with Ocean before re-airing the English DBZ. I don’t hate the Funi actors themselves obviously, but you could tell right away it was downright amateurish. Vegeta sounded awful-not only because his voice was blatently forced, but had this chain-smoker baritone to it which got worse as the show went on. Piccolo was the same damn voice, just more growly. Gohan apparently also now suffered from emphysema. Krillin, Bulma, and Yamcha, were annoying, and Goku sounded either robotic, or like he was going to bust a nut. Then of course were the terrible voices for the Ginyu Force, Frieza(how many Funi actors smoked?), and then the terrible re-dubs of the previously Ocean-dubbed episodes.
Also, the score used to be so tribal and majestic, yet sadistic and dramatic, but then it turned into generic rock synths, and was incoherent half the time. Even the SFX lost their impact, and balance.

Having said that, there were a few things I would have changed about Ocean’s return in the Android Saga-Finale. I hear they were very rushed in completeing these episodes, and didn’t have access to many of the Ocean actors at the time, but Cell was terrible. They should use David Kaye’s Sesshomaru voice or something for Perfect Cell, IMO. Saffron(sp?) needs to be Gohan again from start to his Teens. The person who took over around the Cell saga sounded too young, but was perfect in portraying Goten. As usual, Brian was great as Vegeta, but he sounded even younger than in the Namek days-He would do well to incorperate the more calmed Zechs voice(from Gundam Wing) into his existing Vegeta voice once he returns as a Super Saiyan. Android 18 had perfect sound, but hardly any emotion until the Buu saga; this needed to be rectified. And Kirby, I love ya, but I don’t like you as Goku. If at all possible-since Ian quit or was fired-Peter Kelamis should be recast. But I guess you could do worse than Morrow if push came to shove.
Even though this will undoubtedly be a futile post, that’s something which has been on my mind forever.

You’ll find the UK generally doesn’t like Funimation’s dub and for good reason.
