TOEI Animation Admits DBZ Kai Score is Ripped Off

Some of you may have noticed a lot of similarities with the music from DragonBall Z Kai. If you thought that, then your instincts were correct as TOEI Animation did in fact rip off several movie themes to create the score for DBZ Kai. Not only that, but TOEI has admitted this and has stated that they will replace all the music from Kai. Does this mean all copies of DBZ Kai will be taken off the shelves for the time being until they redo the score? Only time will tell on what exactly they have planned. This could also be the reason behind them not continuing towards the Buu arcs as stated recently.

Here’s a rough translation from the official TOEI website where they admit the music was ripped off.

The existence of multiple suspicious musical pieces which may infringe on the rights of third parties has been confirmed within the musical compositions recorded for “Dragon Ball Kai”, an animated television work produced by this firm. The relevant musical pieces are used as background music in “Dragon Ball Kai”, and measures are promptly being taken to replace the relevant musical pieces from the background music of “Dragon Ball Kai”.

Also, we are proceeding with a swift investigation of the facts, and discussion of countermeasures with concerned parties in the near future.

Update: TOEI Animation now lists the composer Shunsuke Kikuchi as staff under DB Kai music. This is the guy that scored the original track for DragonBall Z. So I suppose it is possible FUNimation will use the original score as well or maybe revert back to Bruce Faulconer’s work.

They can use Bruce Faulconer’s music!

  • Anonymous

Yeah that is possible if FUNimation is forced to replace the music as well.

  • Jim-El

well,i didnt understand the article.Whats dragonball kai theme is similar to?similar to what?can u explain better?

  • Anonymous

Movies such as Terminator salvation, Avatar, I am Legend are a few among others in which themes were ripped off from.

  • Jim-El

thnx for reply. It would also be nice to hear those to understand the comparison

  • Biohazard951753

I knew I heard the iconic Godfather theme

  • Train Hearnet

Didin’t see this coming.I hope they don;t pull em off the shelfs

  • Tom

for the last time, GET FALCONER BACK! – just simply give the existing tracks a modern sound conversion. I didnt start watching Kai because the music was half the battle with DBZ, so epic and original, the first super saiyan transformation blew me away, exactly the kind of scene that those idiots who made dragonball evolution should have been inspired by, ugh Ill always mourn that one, the potential for a movie done the right way… And now to here Toei is ripping people off to remake the score? the answer is obvious.

  • Rs_chaosmaster

I sure hope they don’t use the Faulconer score that would be the worst solution id much rather have Kenichi than Yamumoto

  • Rs_chaosmaster

    mistype not Yamumoto Faulconer

  • Anonymous

We need bruce faulconer back. I mean Super Saiyan 3 man! Think about Super Saiyan 3!

  • DBZluver

This was done since the original composer, Kenji, was fired for stealing other pieces of music.

  • Animessjprince

They just need to stop messing with the music in general, the fact that they keep doing this with DBZ pisses me off actually.

  • saqib mehmood

pleas say to toei animation that where the goku gone after going along with shenron pleas make another episodes of dragon ball z gt i kike it very much and i dishearted after  going of goku i request you to make another album.

  • SONlCBOOM

    Why bother? Kai really sux…
    Why?
    1) They cut the scenes, even the MOST dramatic/important scenes… and
    2) The music =/
    Why keep doin Kai?

DBZ Kai’s music kills the old Kikuchi score. And the scenes needed to be cut because they were filler. And let’s not forget how it’s remastered in HD — it looks incredible.

  • Elsonicboom

If you’re saying this is because you’re not a DB fan…
Watch when Picollo gets killed by Nappa. Old and Kai versions, compare and tell me which is better…

  • bob

I agree with Tom. The new movie will suffer from this as well. Taking his music out is like taking it out of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.

  • supercat

Check this out. Seems like your not the only one. If this guy can do it why can’t Toei do it again.

The Ebb and the Flow – Avatar OST “WAR”
A New Foe Rears his Head – Terminator Salvation theme
The Formidable warrior, the Saiyan – Mortal Kombat Movies OST “Goru vs Artemis”
The Braveheart’s Triumphant return – German Cpt. tsubasa Theme

  • Azura Racon

They might use the Faulconer Score on future DVD releases, but seeing as they have to pay him to air it on TV, I don’t expect to see it in Broadcast.

  • Azura Racon

KAI, You obviously haven’t bothered to see it Uncut.

You really expect all that Brutality and blood with a TV-Y rating?

  • Azura Racon

I don’t see why they didn’t just pull the Ebb and the Flow and A New Foe Rears his head.
Kenji Yamamoto’s been referencing other songs since Battle Point unlimited, which was a remix of an entire German album
