James Marsters talks Dragonball Evolution Sequel

Sci FI Talk has posted a new interview today with James Marsters. Although it is mainly about his other projects, they do get into some detail on the sequel to Dragonball Evolution (Dragonball Reborn) and other Dragon Ball aspects. The interview is in audio format so I went ahead and wrote it out myself, but if you wish to listen to the entire interview, then visit Sci Fi Talk.

Piccolo and GokuSci Fi Talk : Now, you were in Dragonball and I have actually heard rumor of a Dragonball 2. Has anyone talked to you at all?

James Marsters : I hope so, they don’t have to talk to me. I am under contract so I just have to be ready. But I hope we do it because the first one was Dragon Ball and this one we could start to get into Dragon Ball Z territories. It’s a lot more energetic, a lot more violence. Dragon ball is really more about comedy and growing up. And Dragon Ball Z is being forced to fight for what you believe in.

Sci Fi Talk : Well the thing about these movies is because of the manga, it is actually a world wide popularity. Not just the US but in Asia it is so huge.

James Marsters : Yeah it has been for almost 20 years.

    When did this interview happen???
If this happens in the month of Feb, then the possibility of making the sequel could be next year.

If I am Fox Executive, give me reasons why we should make the sequel.  (Quote)

Mother of Piccolo, good lord Kamisama…I pray that they make this film soon. I can’t wait to see Raditz and for them to move on to my favorite of them all-Prince Vegeta! I’m sure these films will make tons more money once Vegeta is introduced!
Oh, and how cute that “Gohan” back there was the first to respond to this. LOL I just bet! Hey Gohan, say hi to Pan for me. :)   (Quote)

It’s just good to hear that the trilogy has not been canceled. I expect a lot more for Db Reborn. But it being one year since the movie premiered in Japan and all we hear is the same ole story about the sequel is a downer.

I know FOX just wanted to introduce the characters with Evolution, but they should ahve at least tried with it. Back in 2003 I think, soon after they acquired rights to make movies based off of the manga, they stated several times they just wanted to start with Z and if they had to do DB then it would basically be half assed. I’ll post those articles if I can find them. But my point is, FOX shouldn’t think twice about the sequel, DB Reborn is what they originally wanted to do. And since Db Evolution actually made profit for them (made 3x the budget, mainly from over seas sales). They have plenty to fund the sequel.

I don’t think it needs a new cast. Personally, I was relieved to know most of the main cast was a fan, knew of or at least studied the Dragon Ball series prior to filming. What it does need is a new director and screenplay writer, Stephen Chow would do just fine. James Wong neglected his ideas during production (SC wanted Krillin, Tien, more fighting and overall being a closer adaptation to the manga, will find links to prove this if requested.) And the fact that Akira Toriyama was claimed to be an executive producer of that film, he also had no input.

The film does not need a reboot. The sequels just need to be better handled and treated with a lot more respect. However if we do see James Wong’s vision brought onto the big screen (says Justin Chatwin when he mentioned James W. wrote and titled the sequel’s screenplay as Dragonball Reborn), then I really hope the screenplay gets a total makeover by Stephen Chow (if he actually is going to a producer again) or someone that will treat it with just as much respect. Because we all know if it was up to James Wong then we’ll most likely see another disappointment. It isn’t his film, it’s everyones, so it should be treated that way.  (Quote)

Yeeeeah, you folks DO realize that the only reason DBZ was as good as it was was because of iut’s backstory, aka Dragon Ball? As in, now that the backstory is screwed, it can’t be like the anime? Meaning they screwed DBZ too?

Oh well, this just proves what I said in the past: old interviews were fake. Still all up in the air.  (Quote)

Dude, so what? The fact of the matter is, DBZ was nothing without DB, and now that DB’s been screwed and they have to use it as a base, it will affect the next installment no matter what.

What anyone saw first has literally NO bearing on respect for the backstory. Even DBZ had to constantly reference it, and many things we didn’t even get until we DID see that series. It made it make much more sense. And the fact of the matter is, they DID start with it. And now the characters, the plot, has to all go from there.

The film is screwed now, no matter what.  (Quote)

Just sayin’, they leafed through a few manga at best.  (Quote)

  18. xam3000hehe says:

The interviews were talking about are the ones that stated that there going to be starting production in the spring of 2009, or all the picture art coming out with speculations that James Marsters has already signed on to make a Dragonball 2

and now he’s said that he hasn’t even been sign on yet. it just shows we were right and Fox has not said anything on the sequel

and that one comment Akira Toriyama stated was way to DISTANCE himself from it. even Steven chow came out and said he wanted to change it because the studio was taking and he say that Akira toriyama couldn’t help but say that Dragonball Evolution didn’t resemble his work at all.

also the actors barely know a THING on dragonball….Dragonball is not about a “growing up” story and DBZ is not about “fighting for what you believe in”

plus they I am sorry avenged but they did not try AT ALL in this film.

Crap acting Crap special effects….the characters are EXACT OPPOSITE of what they should be….Heck if you look very hard in the film you’ll find stock footage from “Independence day”

They screwed up the story so bad that YES they have to reboot it to get this right….if a sequel comes (which it won’t) it could be a complete disaster to the Dragonball franchise.  (Quote)

Lets play by what you guys say and lets say you do get your sequel.

EVERYTHING from DBE is going to carry over

Geeko is going to be the same guy Emo guy he was before and more perverted than roshi, he not going to be 12 and he is not going to have his tail which is a BIG part of the saiyans DBZ.

Bulma is not going to suddenly become the “self absorbed” chick she is supposed to be

Chi Chi is going to still be “Self Absorbed” (which by the way is what bulma should be)

Piccolo is already ruined because his origin is 2000 years instead of 200 years there for roshi or roshi’s master who sacrificed his life to seal piccolo all those years ago cannot be there. which also ruins Roshi’s dynamic in the story

Roshi is still going to be less perverted then Geeko and his backstory has already been ruined

whats going to happend is the sequel is going to make it worse do you guys understand? were not saying follow the anime POINT for POINT were saying keep those parts of the story. but now that its all screwed up there going to have to make MORE changes that people do not want its going to make it worse Vegeta is going to get the exact same treatment as Geeko in DBE and that could be disasterous ….I don’t think you guys know what your in for if they get there sequel.  (Quote)

Uhm James Marsters has signed onto three films and he is still under contract, don’t know how you got he wasn’t signed on anymore, being under contract states that he is. And Beard of Power, those interviews were not fake, it was just James Marsters rambling on like he usually does.

And I find it funny people think we’re all pro Db Evolution since we covered the news the past few years.  (Quote)

avenged: And since Db Evolution actually made profit for them (made 3x the budget, mainly from over seas sales)..  (Quote)

Dude, the movie only made $57 million on a $50 million budget. That’s not enough to generate strong support of a sequel. And point in fact, more people went to see DBE on opening weekend in the U.S. than in China or Japan in its entire theatrical run.

That’s not screaming sequel to me.

As for Marsters, you just insulted the man’s intelligence: saying “I was just told I can definitely say there will be a seuquel” isn’t rambling. Someone lied, and it’s either him or those interviews, and I tend to go with the latter.

Why is it you seem to think people disproving a rumor is an attack on you? Seems you’re either too sensitive or more pro-DBE than you let on.  (Quote)

Saying a script exists and saying a sequel is greenlit are two different things.

    Smarmy little fellow, aren’t you?

As for that last interview: people add statemnts to them frequently, and based off of the info he gives in that interview vs the info he had given on his website, I seriously dboubt it’s validity. :)

Try digging beyond the words of actors, bud. It’ll get you places.

As for budget, no. See, I could go by Chatwin’s interview where he says they had a $120 million budget, be that the case. But pretty much every other source out there says $45 to $50 million.

Factoring that with costs after the retunrs, they may have actually LOST money, dude.  (Quote)

Forgive me messed up what I want to say the words I ment to say….

There were rumors floating around that the movie was “already in production” like working on it RIGHT NOW blah blah

James has not done a ONE THING with “DBR” and this proves it because its not in production yet.

just because something is green lit does not mean its going to happen.

and I know you’ll probably are going to get upset with me about this Avenged but its true….The Actors of the film are not a good source of information in fact some sequels happen and actors are replaced sometimes.

Now hearing from the Director, Producer, or from 20th century Fox from a official source is “official”  (Quote)

  26. TBOP says:

Now I KNOW I can expect to get meself banned again, but this is what I mean, skippy: You’re jumping on EVERYTHING, and when someone presents evidence it’s false, rather than being objective and verifying these claims, you take it personally and drop insults.

    Why?

What’s the deal? According to you, you think they’re nothing more than rumors anyways. So if one gets proven false, and you openly declared it was a rumor, then WHY are you acting like they’re calling you a liar and you have to take it personally and throw it in their face? Are you really that elitist and petty, or are you mad that something about DBE isn’t true and thus mad at he who proved it?

I’m just saying man, either drop the objectivity nonsense or man up and accept criticism without insults and search it out. I’ve practically HANDED you sources to use and you still refuse to do so. Not to mention you simply assume I’ve spoken of you in the past, called me an idiot and insisted Marsters said the sequel was coming and we needed to get over it, and this last piece of news PROVES exactly what I said.  (Quote)

  27. avenged says:

The interviews were not fake or rumors. I gave you evidence on that. I’m not backing up these recent claims, so I don’t know what you are whining about over there. And you should realize that original intent changes. Don’t you recall the film was going to shoot in Montreal, but got changed and the film itself was delayed for years? Of course you do, so saying the interview was fake just because they did not shoot the sequel last fall is petty in itself when you should know plans change.

Also, try paying attention to date of certain posts you are reading on this site. I feel sorry for ya if you think all those featured posts are brand fucking new. maybe then you will realize I have not stated the sequel is confirmed.

Also pay attention to the posts themselves as I always source unless I get some shit sent via email.  (Quote)

  28. avenged says:

And don’t be so surprised that I post rumors, this is a general DB site after all. Does it say Official Dragon Ball News anywhere on the site? No. And I am the one presenting evidence on those interviews, you seem to think I believe all the Reborn rumors are true or something. I DON’T GET YOU. I simply brought up those interviews that you said never happened, then you bring up some shit from the past which was a misunderstanding and some nonsense over all the rumors.  (Quote)

Rate : Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  29. TBOP says:

Here’s the difference, sir: Plans change, yes. But greenlighting a sequel which was announced NOWHERE ELSE but an interview with a foieign fanzine and THEN saying he has heard NOTHING about it in this last interview speaks VOLUMES about the validity of that article. Especially since he claims he was booked on a European tour through summer when he never was.

As for paying attention and that “misunderstanding” which you ALSO never bothered to search out, that’s exactly when I mean. In that comment section you stated I needed to accept the “fact” that the sequel is coming. You also then insulted me many times over without watching that full video or you would have heard me reference that SOURCE as lying/being innacurate, not you.

The bottom line is this: I know it doesn’t say you’re “official”. In fact, i said as much. What I don’t get is that you DO state these are rumors, yet when someone goes after the validity of the RUMORS, you act as if they’re questioning YOU or attacking YOU. THAT is the point.

Bottom line: that interview has false information. I said as much from the beginning. You didn’t believe it at the time. Then this comes out, I turn out to be right, and you’re getting all offended over it. Dude, never did I say YOU were wrong. Never did I even at first claim that you were defending the movie. I was just stating my reflief about being right about RUMORS, and you get on my case, man.

THAT is the problem I have right now. You’re acting way too sensitive over this.  (Quote)

    DBR shouldn’t happen because:
    *No tails
    *No REAL Oozaru
*Goku is too weak in DBE to stand up to Vegeta. Even with a Kai-O Ken X100, which would rip him apart at such a weak Ki (which doesn’t exist in the film), he wouldn’t be able to defeat Vegeta as Justin Chatwin. There’s just no way. Geeko is simply TOO WEAK. He can’t break a rock with one finger at 18, something the real Goku could do at age 12. In short, the Kamehameha in the film wouldn’t help, Goku doesn’t know about Ki so he can’t do Kai-O Ken or Genki Dama, and he simply won’t be strong enough.
*We never met Kami in DBE. We also never link Piccolo and the unseen Kami to the life of the Dragon Balls. Its also never demonstrated how easily they can collect the balls by DBZ.
*If Goku is dead, there will be no one to help Goku defeat the Saiyans, not even Yajirobe to cut off Vegeta’s unpresent tail. Not that it’ll matter, since the Oozaru’s aren’t really that big or menacing in the films, and we’ll need another “blood moon” (wtf was that about?) before we see another Oozaru.

Right… well, I just thought I’d throw that out there… it would be VERY difficult to adapt the Saiyan Saga at this point.. I hope they include Bubbles and Gregory… And you know, I wouldn’t be opposed to a Dead Zone movie, I feel very strongly that a Dead Zone film could serve as a very strong reboot and introduction to DBZ.  (Quote)

the funny thing is that, everyone seem… ahem… excited to hear that there is going to be a sequel to high school ball… errmm i mean… dragon ball evolution… havent you learned yet? a sequel CANNOT be made for that crappy of a movie that was dragon ball evolution… they took everything that made dragon ball what it was and just destroyed them, under the banner of “Reboot”… lame… best thing they can do is just to redo it… oh yeah another thing… reboot doesnt necessarily mean good thing… and thats the case with dragon ball… it became so iconic that a reboot will feel wrong in any way possible… its as if you’re tryna reboot Star wars… not gonna happen…  (Quote)

So, I think that Fox should scrap this movie and start over. Like with the Hulk, start over even when goku first land on earth as a child. That would have been a great way to start off a motion picture series. They should get 10 hard core DB fans and set them in a room. Bet they will make a more fan worthy movie than what Fox did. Honestly it seems like Fox tried making a movie that anyone could watch. However in the process of this they lost track of what DB is all about. Thus, massacred the film for the real fans that want to see a good DB movie and made some @#$# movie that no one gonna like. In the end DB is the kind of show that only fans are going to like and want to see. If you don’t appeal to the real fans then you’re looking a dud. : / REMAKE  (Quote)
